What you should know about kids and safety on the Internet
Most people never have a threatening or harassing experience on the Internet. People worry that the anonymity people have on the Internet allows people to do or say things that they might not do face-to-face. These things could range from sending e-mails containing bad language to soliciting an offline meeting with someone whom they've met in a chat room. Consequently, kids who go online need to be very cautious when communicating with strangers over e-mail, on bulletin boards, and in chat rooms.

What should I tell my child about Internet safety?
You should tell your children that it is NOT OK to tell someone any identifying personal information, such as their last name, address, school name, or phone number. Educating your children about these precautions and monitoring how they spend their time on-line are two important steps you can take to make their online time safe and fun.

The following do's and don't's cover the basics of Internet safety for kids. Periodically sit down and review these rules with your child. You may have others to add, depending on the child's age and interests.

  • Do get permission from your parent before going online.
  • Don't give out personal information (such as your last name, home address or phone number) online.
  • Do show your parents any site that asks for information and get their permission (it's the law!) before giving out any information.
  • Don't arrange to meet in person with someone you only know on the Internet.
  • Don't respond to mean, threatening, or harassing e-mail.
  • Do tell a parent or teacher if you see or read something that makes you uncomfortable.
  • Don't tell other kids any of the screen names, user IDs or passwords you use.
  • Do treat others as you would want to be treated!
